UAH Alumni to be Recognized

September 9, 2009 by Kelsey Thacker

On Oct. 19, 2009, the UAH Alumni Association will honor outstanding UAH alumni with the Alumni of Achievement Award. The Alumni of Achievement Award is the highest honor the Alumni Association can give and is annually awarded to UAH graduates who have gone on to become distinguished members of society.

According to Rachel Osby, the Director of Alumni Relations, the Alumni of Achievement Award was created in 2001, the year marking the 50th anniversary of classes offered by the university. In honor of the anniversary, fifty Alumni of Achievement Awards were initially conferred upon UAH alumni, though the usual number is between five and ten. There will be nine awards given out this year.

Any UAH alumnus can be nominated for the Alumni of Achievement Award. Winners are chosen by a committee made up of UAH Alumni Association board members as well as UAH faculty and staff. Often, many winners still reside in the Huntsville/Madison area, although winners this year also live as far away as Washington, D.C., and California.

Nominations for the award are accepted throughout the year, with winners chosen in the spring. Award nominees must have a verifiable record of leadership in their community or profession, must have graduated no less than a decade ago, and must have earned at least a bachelor’s degree from UAH. Nominees who are also donors to the university will have preference over those who are not.

Invitations to attend the Oct. 5 luncheon honoring the 2009 Alumni of Achievement Award winners will be sent out at the end of September. Tickets to the luncheon can also be purchased. Anyone interested in attending the Oct. 5 luncheon can contact Rachel Osby by emailing Rachel.Osby@uah.edu. The Alumni of Achievement Awards luncheon is to be held on October 19th as mentioned at the beginning of the article, not October 5th. We look forward to honoring these outstanding alumni on October 19th. For more information on this year’s winners, please visit http://www.uah.edu/alumni/getinvolved/achievement.php
